First Nations children (up to age 14) and First Nations youth (aged 15 to 30) currently attending school are invited to submit videos and artwork that tell stories of their First Nations cultures and everyday life:

  • short storytelling video of songs, dances
  • learning on the land
  • artwork on culture
  • storytelling theme

This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase cultures in your communities and schools. Your submission will be featured on the First Nations Education Administrators Storyteller Page Àdisὁkewinini in Algonquin Anishinaabemowin.

Guidelines

  • Eight Regional winners (individual, class or group) will be selected by draw for each of the following areas across Canada. 1) Yukon & NWT, and Nunavut 2) British Columbia, 3) Alberta, 4) Saskatchewan, 5) Manitoba, 6) Ontario, 7) Quebec and 8) Atlantic (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland & Labrador).
  • National winners will be selected by their peers. Each entrant will be asked to identify the top three submissions that resonate with them (liked the message, can use the teaching, or learned something new).
  • Each entrant views all submissions on the FNEAA Storyteller Page to select the top three favourites.
  • Contest open to First Nations children (up to age 14) and First Nations youth (aged 15 to 30) currently attending school.
  • One entry per student, class or student group
  • Video length: 45 seconds to 3 minutes
  • Artwork that reflects stories, cultures, and languages
  • More examples below of First Nations cultures, languages, storytelling, songs, dances, learning on the land, etc.
  • All submissions must be original

Eligibility and Submission Criteria

The draw is open to First Nations children (up to age 14) and First Nations youth (aged 15 to 30) currently attending school.

To be eligible, your video or artwork must:

  • Be between 45 seconds and 3 minutes in length (including any titles or credits)
  • Be an original creation and all content original created by the student, class or student group. Videos will be accepted in the following formats: mp4, avi, mov. Content can include but limited to storytelling, songs, language, dance, and land-based education
  • Artwork – paintings, photography, drawings, collage, digital, etc.
  • Any videos of photos must include a release of the persons shown
  • Not include personal information
  • Be appropriate for all ages
  • Sent via email or YouTube link

A completed application, proof of student status and entry must be received by FNEAA by 11:59pm EST on February 3, 2023. Draw winner may also be invited to participate in the First Nations Education Administrators Association’s Virtual Youth & Knowledge Gathering Circle on February 15, 2023.

As proof of student status, applicants may submit one of the following documents: school-issued student card, class schedule, report card, transcripts, letter from a teacher/guidance counselor/school administrator or band student support officer, enrolment letter from an academic institution.

By submitting an entry, you consent to the use, reproduction, publication, transmission and/or broadcast of your video, your name, institution, community/city/town, age, grade and/or award information. First Nations Education Administrators Association reserves the right to use any submitted videos and information for educational and communications purposes, such as use on the FNEAA website, E-Blasts, and communications. A parent or guardian of any applicant under 18 years of age must sign the application form and consent to the above terms on behalf of the minor. Application form below.

Any entries suspected of using copyrighted material will be disqualified. The First Nations Education Administrators Association reserves the right to refuse videos with inappropriate, offensive, rude, abusive, and/or discriminatory content.

Regional Draws

  • All students, classes and student groups will receive a certificate of participation and a small gift.
  • Each region will include a draw for three awards for your school cultural, arts and class program (First prize: $500.00; Second prize: $250.00; and Third prize: $200.00.
  • Regional Awards will be chosen by draw for each of the following areas across Canada; 1) Yukon & NWT, and Nunavut 2) British Columbia, 3) Alberta, 4) Saskatchewan, 5) Manitoba, 6) Ontario, 7) Quebec and 8) Atlantic (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland & Labrador).

Second Prize: $250

Third prize: $200

National Winners
