National Indigenous Veterans Day

National Indigenous Veterans Day

Posted on November 8, 2023

The First Nations Education Administrators Association (FNEAA) commemorates National Indigenous Veteran’s Day on November 8, 2023 and acknowledges all those who still serve in the Canadian Armed Forces. First Nations, Inuit and Métis honour this day via gatherings and various ceremonies, throughout our schools and communities across the country.

For over 200 years, Indigenous people have been an integral part of Canadian military history. Aboriginal Veterans Day was initially established in Manitoba in 1994 and has since been adopted nationwide as National Indigenous Veterans Day, observed annually on November 8. It’s a day dedicated to acknowledging the significant contributions and sacrifices made by Indigenous individuals, not only in Canada’s wartime endeavours but also in its peace keeping efforts.

FNEAA would like to honour the more than 500 who made the ultimate sacrifice and hold up our Indigenous brothers and sisters who served and continue to serve in Canada and the United States Armed Forces.

Join FNEAA in this meaningful observance as we remember, reflect, and give thanks to those who have safeguarded our nation and our future. Their sacrifices are etched in our hearts, minds, and spirits.
